6th Annual Unusual Reading Spot Contest – due April 20, 2018

The England Library is so excited to host our sixth annual Unusual Reading Spot Contest!  Students enjoy having their picture taken while reading in an unusual place or pose and entering their picture in our school-wide contest.  Students might be found reading in a refrigerator, near an important landmark, in a basketball hoop, or any place your imagination takes you. Our students read EVERYWHERE!

In the photos, students should be visibly reading a book – and we should clearly be able to see the book cover (see examples above).  The 10 winning images will be enlarged to 16” x 20” for display in our England Library during the 2018-19 school year.

Who:  Any student attending England!  (Only one entry per student, however students are welcome and encouraged to include siblings in a joint photo!)

When:  from NOW until Friday, April 20, 2018

Contest Rules:  Participating students must turn in a 4” x 6” or 5” x 7” photo print on photo paper of their contest entry (sorry, entries cannot be emailed).  The submissions will be voted on by a panel of judges and the winning images will then need to provide a digital version of their image (please take the photo in the highest resolution your camera will allow) so that we may enlarge it for display in the library.  Minimum resolution pixel dimensions are 1840 x 2300; optimum resolution pixel dimensions are 2400 x 3000 or higher. Please note that “camera-phone” photos will not be a high enough resolution to print in such an enlarged size for display in the library.  Additionally, please do not Photoshop or otherwise edit the photo in order to superimpose parts of the image – we want it to be as authentic of an image as possible.  Pick up a participation form in the library or download one below to attach to your contest entry picture.

Please note these additional guidelines:  Your book must “match” the unusual reading spot, and the cover of your book must be visible in the photo.

Author Elizabeth Eulberg visits 3rd, 4th and 5th graders!

We were beyond excited to meet hilarious and energetic Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominated author Elizabeth Eulberg when she visited our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students yesterday! Classes have been reading The Great Shelby Holmes as a read-aloud this semester, and we were all anticipating the chance to meet her and hear more behind-the-scenes details about being an author and how she crafts her stories. What a FUN day in the library! Thanks again to PTA for helping fund special events like our author visit!

Texas Book Festival is this weekend!

Have you ever been to the Texas Book Festival at the Texas Capitol? If not, you are missing out! It is a wonderful, FREE, family-friendly event for children and adults who love books! The Texas Book Festival features many authors and illustrators, as well as fun reading-related events throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, November 4th at 10:00 am, a group of students from Austin-area schools will be announcing NEXT year’s Texas Bluebonnet Award list! If you are planning to attend the festival, be sure to stop by the Texas Tent at 10:00 on Saturday morning for that special announcement! Also, our very own 2nd graders from Ms. Holcek’s class will be introducing Author & Illustrator Brian Floca on Saturday at 2:00pm in the Children’s Read Me A Story Tent!

Coins for Coats: Oct. 30 – Nov. 3, 2017

Student Council and the England Library are co-sponsoring this year’s Coins for Coats program, helping the Round Rock Area Serving Center buy new coats for children in need throughout Round Rock ISD. With your help, they guarantee that your kindness will be passed on through the warmth of a coat.

If you would like to help, students can bring coins or bills to the school library to place in our special “Coins for Coats” collection containers between October 30th and November 3rd.

We are encouraging students to bring one type of coin each day that week and offering incentives for collecting the most funds:

        MONDAY = bring pennies
       TUESDAY = bring nickels
       WEDNESDAY = bring dimes
       THURSDAY = bring quarters
        FRIDAY = bring $1 bills (or $5, $10, checks made to “RRASC: Keep Round Rock Warm“).

The TOP overall classroom will win a $40 Gift Certificate to spend at our Fall Book Fair plus an invitation for a popcorn reading party in the library! The TOP classroom per grade level will each win a $15 Book Fair Gift Certificate plus a classroom incentive.

The Round Rock Area Serving Center has never turned a child in need away without a coat.

Last year, our Elsa England community alone raised an incredible $4,603 – and across Round Rock ISD, Coins for Coats raised $30,174 in all, benefiting students right here in Round Rock!

Please help to make this year a success!
