Gingerbread Man Literacy Night

Over 100 Kindergarten and 1st Graders had a blast last night at our annual Family Literacy Night! Students dressed in their pajamas and enjoyed reading an eBook version of The Gingerbread Man, learning a little bit about the folk tale, and participating in hands-on learning stations related to the story.

RRHS Dragon Tales Football Players were here to interact with the students and share their love of reading and learning. They also brought a huge box of t-shirts to give away to our students, so many students entered their names in the drawing and won a Dragon Tales T-shirt!

Vote for Forest North Elementary!

Parents and Teachers,

Please consider helping our neighbor school, Forest North Elementary, win a grant for $60,000 to spend in their library on eBooks, Playaways, and additional technology for their classrooms in the nationwide Follett Challenge!  They are currently in 12th place in this nationwide contest; they are one of only THREE schools from Texas to be selected!

CLICK HERE TO VOTE – you can vote once a day!  All you need is a valid e-mail address.  They will NOT send any SPAM – I promise! 🙂  The voting continues until March 18th, so please bookmark the site and consider voting daily!

They filmed an awesome video to include the ENTIRE school, celebrating their school pride and love of learning.  You can check out the video below!

They were even featured on KVUE a few weeks ago!  Click here to read the story and watch the news segment!

Unusual Reading Spot Contest Ends January 18th!

The England Library is so excited to host our First Annual Unusual Reading Spot Contest!  Students will enjoy having their picture taken while reading in an unusual place or pose and entering their picture in our school-wide contest.  Students might be found reading in a refrigerator, near an important landmark, in a basketball hoop, or any place your imagination takes you. In the photos, students should be visibly reading a book (see examples below).  The winners will have their photos enlarged to 12″ x 16” for display in our England Library.

Who :  Any student attending England!  (Only one entry per student.)

When :  from NOW until Friday, January 18, 2013

How :  Participating students must turn in a 4” x 6” or 5” x 7” photo print on photo paper of their contest entry.  The entries will be voted on by a panel of judges and the winning images will then need to provide a digital version of their image (please take the photo in the highest resolution your camera will allow) so that we may enlarge it for display in the library.  Please note that “camera-phone” photos will not be a high enough resolution to print in an enlarged size.  Please pick up a participation form in the library or download one from the eFolder or Library Website to attach to your contest entry picture.

Is your family traveling somewhere special over Winter Break?  Grab your digital camera and a book and think of a creative reading spot or pose to enter in our contest!  Happy Reading!
