2 weeks left for Six Flags Six Hour Reading Logs!

There are only TWO WEEKS left to log your 360 minutes for the Six Flags Six-Hour Read to Succeed Program!

Students in grades K-5 are encouraged to participate in the Six Flags Six-Hour Read to Succeed Program running from January 6th through February 25th.  Six Flags Fiesta Texas encourages students to read for six hours outside of their regularly assigned reading — to READ FOR FUN – and is happy to reward those students with a free ticket to Six Flags Fiesta Texas!  Forms were distributed to all K-5 students through their take-home folders during the first week of January.

Please read the front and back of the form, fill out as directed (including parents’ initials and signature) and return NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25th to your child’s teacher.  The theme park tickets will arrive mid-May for those who participate.

Bluebonnet Recap and Voting Parties 2015

At the end of January, we held our third annual Bluebonnet Voting Parties!! This year, so many students were eligible to vote that we had to have THREE voting parties in order to fit everyone in the library!

045

We had 135 students who qualified to vote for their favorite Bluebonnet book — these 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students read 5 or more Bluebonnet Books from the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List:

  • 45 voters in 3rd grade
  • 48 voters in 4th grade
  • 40 voters in 5th grade

Some other fun facts about this year’s Bluebonnet Program:

  • England students read 1,570 Bluebonnet Books between August and January! WOW!
  • Kudos to Mrs. Schermerhorn’s Class for reading the most books – 188!
  • Mrs. Potral’s Class ROCKED the Bluebonnet Books — they had the most qualified voters — 17!

The Bluebonnet Breakfast will take place this Friday! We have a record-breaking 43 students qualified to attend the Bluebonnet Breakfast, for those who read 10+ books in 3rd grade, 12+ books in 4th grade, and 14+ books in 5th grade!!!  WOW!!

Finally, we have 14 students qualified to attend our Campus Battle of the Bluebonnets, for those who read all 20 books. This year’s participants are: Alizeh, Neha, Saanvi, Paridhi, Suhani, Ashley, Changbin, Hailey, Jennifer, Sasank, Aditya, Akshay, Evan and Krisha! Way to go, Bluebonnet Rockstars!

I am SO proud of all of our Bluebonnet Program Participants from this year! Reading the Bluebonnet Books expands your reading horizons and I know our students discovered new authors and genres and enjoyed participating in our fun program!

Bluebonnet Author Liesl Shurtliff visits 3-5th graders!

Our 3-5th graders were SO EXCITED to meet Bluebonnet Author Liesl Shurtliff during her visit to Round Rock! Every class had read her nominated book, Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin over the past semester, so Ms. Shurtliff’s visit was highly anticipated. It is always a special event when an author visits our school, but this visit in particular was extra special since Rump is nominated on this year’s Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List and is being read by students across Texas this year!

Her interactive presentation engaged our students and they enjoyed participating in a Readers Theater with Ms. Shurtliff. We can’t wait for Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk to be published in April!

Thank you to our wonderful PTA for financing Ms. Shurtliff’s visit for our students!

Gingerbread Man Literacy Night

Over 100 Kindergarten and 1st Graders had a blast last night at our annual Family Literacy Night! Students dressed in their pajamas and enjoyed reading an eBook version of The Gingerbread Man, learning a little bit about the folk tale, and participating in hands-on learning stations related to the story.

RRHS Dragon Tales Football Players were here to interact with the students and share their love of reading and learning. They also brought a huge box of t-shirts to give away to our students, so many students entered their names in the drawing and won a Dragon Tales T-shirt!

Flora & Ulysses Book Club Success!

We had SO much fun during our first Bluebonnet Book Club of the year! Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Book Club members met FIFTEEN times during their recess this Fall and together, we read Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo, one of the twenty nominated books on this year’s Texas Bluebonnet Award List!

These 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders visited the library during their recess almost every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the months of September and October in order to share the reading of Flora & Ulysses together!

Today, we had our end-of-book celebration, complete with all passing our Bluebonnet Quizzes, a book discussion, and of course, a donut with sprinkles (Ulysses begged me to buy them for everyone)!

Writing Camp with Phil Bildner 2014

One of my favorite days of the year is when Author Phil Bildner visits our library for a Writing Camp with 4th grade!  He leads them in a fun, engaging learning session all about writing and the kids always walk away with new ideas and inspiration.  This was his third visit to England Elementary and he had nothing but amazing things to say about our school and our awesome 4th grade students!

IMG_2575-edited

Mr. Bildner gave us lots of great advice, but I wanted to share with you some of his most important messages:

  • If you put your name on something, it is a direct reflection of who you are… so make sure it’s your best work!
  • The key to being a good writer is that you have to READ!!  Read on your own, for fun, every single day!  Reading is NOT OPTIONAL.
  • The real writing takes place during the re-writing.  Editing is not the most fun part of writing, but it is the MOST important.  Your first draft should never be your final draft!
  • When you think you’re done, you’ve just begun.  Spend 10 more minutes on your writing and you can turn something good into something better!

Several students were selected to have a special “Meet and Greet” with Phil Bildner! These students had written really great letters persuading me to choose them to attend the Meet and Greet and we all had a great time visiting and asking each other questions.

Thank you to our FABULOUS PTA for allowing his visit to be possible!  We are so lucky to have a PTA who supports bringing authors and writing camp to our students.

A few weeks ago, Phil Bildner began his own web show on YouTube focused on reading and writing. You can watch the first episode below, entitled “Just Read.”

Official Camp Bluebonnet 2014 Video

Mrs. Fournier, the librarian at Forest North Elementary, is a movie-making genius! She created the most AWESOME video to share our 2014 Camp Bluebonnet session and I am so excited to be posting it for our England friends to see! (Don’t forget to turn on the volume on your computer!)

Thank you again to all of our FABULOUS campers for participating in our 4th Annual Camp Bluebonnet! I’m looking forward to another incredible camp session in 2015!
