Flora & Ulysses Book Club Success!

We had SO much fun during our first Bluebonnet Book Club of the year! Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Book Club members met FIFTEEN times during their recess this Fall and together, we read Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo, one of the twenty nominated books on this year’s Texas Bluebonnet Award List!

These 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders visited the library during their recess almost every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the months of September and October in order to share the reading of Flora & Ulysses together!

Today, we had our end-of-book celebration, complete with all passing our Bluebonnet Quizzes, a book discussion, and of course, a donut with sprinkles (Ulysses begged me to buy them for everyone)!

Wonder Author R.J. Palacio visits RRISD

It is not every day that 2,500 Round Rock ISD students ranging from 3rd through 12th grade gather in one location to hear a New York Times Bestselling author speak about a book they have all read.  Wow!

February 10, 2014 was a very special day in Round Rock. Every librarian in the district brought a group of students to the Round Rock Sports Center to hear Author R.J. Palacio speak about choosing kind and her bestselling book, Wonder.

As groups were arriving, we watched several student-made book trailers for Wonder on large projection screens.

After several introductions and presentations, our students intently listened to R.J. Palacio’s words.

45 England Leopards in 3rd-5th grade who had read Wonder were chosen at random from a drawing to attend the Field Trip. It was such a wonderful experience, and I know our students took a great deal away from the event!

Harnessing the Power of Reading

boywhoharnessedthewind

This week, our Kindergarten, First, and Second graders are reading William Kamkwamba’s inspiring story, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind about a boy with big dreams who built a windmill from junkyard scraps in order to help his village generate electricity. This book is one of our Armadillo Readers’ Choice nominees for this year.

Check out one or more of the videos below to hear more about William’s story!

Last Day to Check Out Books: Friday, May 10

This Friday, May 10th, will be the last day you can check out books during this school year!    We have to start collecting all of our library books to make sure they are safe and sound over the summer and ready for you to check out again in August!

All library books are due on Friday, May 17th!

Beginning Friday, May 17th, we will have a DAILY drawing for a student in each grade level to win free stuff if their library account is clear (all books turned in, no overdue books, no damaged or lost books)!

Vote for Forest North Elementary!

Parents and Teachers,

Please consider helping our neighbor school, Forest North Elementary, win a grant for $60,000 to spend in their library on eBooks, Playaways, and additional technology for their classrooms in the nationwide Follett Challenge!  They are currently in 12th place in this nationwide contest; they are one of only THREE schools from Texas to be selected!

CLICK HERE TO VOTE – you can vote once a day!  All you need is a valid e-mail address.  They will NOT send any SPAM – I promise! 🙂  The voting continues until March 18th, so please bookmark the site and consider voting daily!

They filmed an awesome video to include the ENTIRE school, celebrating their school pride and love of learning.  You can check out the video below!

They were even featured on KVUE a few weeks ago!  Click here to read the story and watch the news segment!

1st Grade Service Learning Project for Libraries of Love in Uganda

We are so proud of our 1st grade students who led an amazing Service Learning project over the past few weeks to benefit Libraries of Love in Uganda!  These amazing students learned about the children of Uganda, taught everyone at England Elementary about what libraries and schools are like in Uganda, and led a fundraising drive and Walk-a-Thon.

Libraries of Love was started by a former RRISD librarian, and this amazing organization builds libraries each summer and trains the students, teachers, and librarians in how to use the new libraries in Uganda.  Our 1st grade students did an amazing job in raising awareness about this worthwhile cause!  Way to go, 1st grade!

12 days left to read the Bluebonnet Books!

ThirdFourth, and Fifth Graders:
You have TWELVE days to finish reading those Bluebonnet Books!  Many students have set goals of reading at least 5 of this year’s books, and some are working their way toward reading 10, or even 20!

Remember, the more books you read, the more likely you will be invited to be on the England Team in RRISD’s Battle of the Bluebonnets in March!  Check out the video clip below of last year’s Battle.

Our Bluebonnet program ends on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 2:45pm and all reports must be submitted online before that time!

Students reading 5 will be invited to our Voting Parties during the last week in January!

Unusual Reading Spot Contest Ends January 18th!

The England Library is so excited to host our First Annual Unusual Reading Spot Contest!  Students will enjoy having their picture taken while reading in an unusual place or pose and entering their picture in our school-wide contest.  Students might be found reading in a refrigerator, near an important landmark, in a basketball hoop, or any place your imagination takes you. In the photos, students should be visibly reading a book (see examples below).  The winners will have their photos enlarged to 12″ x 16” for display in our England Library.

Who :  Any student attending England!  (Only one entry per student.)

When :  from NOW until Friday, January 18, 2013

How :  Participating students must turn in a 4” x 6” or 5” x 7” photo print on photo paper of their contest entry.  The entries will be voted on by a panel of judges and the winning images will then need to provide a digital version of their image (please take the photo in the highest resolution your camera will allow) so that we may enlarge it for display in the library.  Please note that “camera-phone” photos will not be a high enough resolution to print in an enlarged size.  Please pick up a participation form in the library or download one from the eFolder or Library Website to attach to your contest entry picture.

Is your family traveling somewhere special over Winter Break?  Grab your digital camera and a book and think of a creative reading spot or pose to enter in our contest!  Happy Reading!
