Writing Camp with Phil Bildner 2013

One of my favorite days of the year is when Author Phil Bildner visits our library for a Writing Camp with 4th grade!  He leads them in a fun, engaging learning session all about writing and the kids always walk away with new ideas and inspiration.  This was his second visit to England Elementary and he had nothing but amazing things to say about our school and our awesome 4th grade students!IMG_1969-edited

Mr. Bildner gave us lots of great advice, but I wanted to share with you some of his most important messages:

  • If you put your name on something, it is a direct reflection of who you are… so make sure it’s your best work!
  • The key to being a good writer is that you have to READ!!  Read on your own, for fun, every single day!  Reading is NOT OPTIONAL.
  • The real writing takes place during the re-writing.  Editing is not the most fun part of writing, but it is the MOST important.  Your first draft should never be your final draft!
  • When you think you’re done, you’ve just begun.  Spend 10 more minutes on your writing and you can turn something good into something better!

Several students were selected to have a special lunch discussion with Phil Bildner! These students had written really great letters persuading me to choose them for the lunch group and we all had a great time visiting and asking each other questions.IMG_2016-edited

His newest book, The Soccer Fence, will be released in March 2014.  Be on the lookout for an opportunity to preorder a signed copy in the Spring!IMG_2017-edited

Mr. Bildner challenged ALL of our 4th grade students to become EXTREME READERS, and to try a new genre, book, or author!  He even recommended many of the titles that we have here in the library! Check out the images below for some of the books he is recommending to our fourth graders:IMG_2022-edited

Author Julie Sternberg Visited England Elementary!

Today, author Julie Sternberg visited the Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders at England Elementary!  She is the author of the Texas-Bluebonnet-Award-nominated-book Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie.

She spoke to our students about the writing process, how she gets the ideas for her stories, and she also gave us a sneak peek into her next book (due in April 2013) titled Like Bug Juice on a Burger!  Did you know that “bug juice” is what they call fruit punch at summer camp?

Thank you to our AWESOME PTA for sponsoring her visit to England Elementary!  I know our leopards had a great time reading the book and meeting Mrs. Sternberg today!

Fall Into Reading Night – Tuesday 10/16

We hope you’ll join us for our first Fall Reading Family Night at England Elementary next Tuesday!  We’ll have fun stations for students and parents to visit, and all students attending have a chance to win free books!

Thank you to our fabulous PTA for making this awesome event possible!  See you on Tuesday 🙂

Author Julie Sternberg to visit Kinder-3rd grades

We are SO excited to be welcoming Author Julie Sternberg to England Elementary on October 18th to speak to our Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students!  Ms. Sternberg’s first novel, Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie, has been nominated as a selection on this year’s Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List!

Local bookstore The Book Spot is helping us take preorder book sales for Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie for students who wish to have Ms. Sternberg personalize a copy during her visit.  Please click on the image below to download — keep in mind that the order forms are due by October 11th!

Thank you to our AWESOME PTA for sponsoring Ms. Sternberg’s visit!  She is traveling all the way from Brooklyn, New York to visit our school and without PTA, her visit would not be possible!
